statement

I am in awe of the universal patterns found in the natural world. The mathematical elegance of foam bubbles in water, fronds of a fern, even the seed head of a weedy teasel plant fascinate me. I have an emotional response to nature that I funnel into my sculptures. I create abstract, organic sculptures with fiber-coated wire, some of which I spin on a spinning wheel. The rawness of the fiber adds texture to the sculptures' simple shapes. By knitting the sculptures, I can replicate natural growth by adding or subtracting stitches. I am interested in exploring how growth can be stripped down to its fundamental paths, rather than a literal translation.

Much of the wool I use comes from Ohio farms. I try to purchase wool from farmers who believe in sustainable farming practices because I believe this once traditional way is the way of the future. You may also find flax and hemp (which can be easily grown without pesticides), organic cotton, vintage thread, and wild silk in my designs.
